World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

Today is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, not to be confused with Sickle Cell Awareness month which will be in September.  In 2008, the General Assembly of the United Nations recognized Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) as a public health concern and chose the 19th as the commemoration day.  SCD affects millions of people worldwide, both adults and kids and is a potentially fatal disease. It is a disease that causes the shape of red blood cells to change and become crescent-shaped. Having sickle cell disease means a lifelong battle against the health problems it can cause, such as pain, infections, anemia, and stroke. But many people are able to have a very good quality of life by learning to manage the disease.

My colors and quotes in my planner for this week represents the colors of Sickle Cell (as close to what I have, I should say)
